That is a good word to describe me, at least at times. Fixation is a single-mindedness that may be beneficial when pursing some goal. Casting aside distraction the mission is accomplished, the victory is won, the job is done.

Vexation. A word to describe many who deal with a person with fixation because while those around may find time to balance mission and merriment, victory and vices or job and joy, the one with the fixation goes blind to these things while focused. Worse yet, the fixation can at times be on the wrong area entirely, often a detriment to the fixator and the fixated (the one who is overly focused and the target of the focus, respectively).

When fixation become obsession, compulsion or addiction or some other unpleasant -tion then the fixator is in for a wild ride. Job’s “friend’s” were fixated on Job’s guilt. They sat with him hours on end tearing him up and down, trying to get him to confess to what he had not done. Their singleminded devotion to their ideal of bad stuff happens implies bad behavior did not waver. In the midst of this trial, Job produces a great insight.

<sup>
25 For I know that my Redeemer and Vindicator lives, and at last He [the Last One] will stand upon the earth.

26 And after my skin, even this body, has been destroyed, then from my flesh or without it I shall see God,

27 Whom I, even I, shall see for myself and on my side! And my eyes shall behold Him, and not as a stranger! My heart pines away and is consumed within me.

28 If you say, How we will pursue him! [and continue to persecute me with the claim] that the root [cause] of all these [afflictions] is found in me,

29 Then beware and be afraid of the sword [of divine vengeance], for wrathful are the punishments of that sword, that you may know there is a judgment.

JOB 19:25-29 (AMP)

Job knows that God is both the one who makes him right (Redeemer) and the one who will right for the wrongs done to Job (Vindicator). Job tells us that he doesn’t know if he will rise again with flesh or not but he has no doubt he will come before God alive. He understands that the one worthy fixation (though it seems before and after his ordeal that he could have any number of women, any level of power, any amount of wealth and so on) is fellowship with God. He who fellowships with God rests assured and sees rightly. He who does not lays judgement upon his fellow wrongly and should fear the judgement coming for him because of his presumption.

Conclusion. Knowing there is a judgement and that Judge is both a Redeemer and Vindicator shall we not let Him be the fixation of our minds and hearts? Is there any sense in pouring ourselves into any other endeavor, any other person, any other thing? He will direct us in good works and profitable deeds but always we must return to him as our source and desire rather than targeting our affections elsewhere. This is the proper balance for the fixator, a fixation on Jesus Christ who directs our attention in the manner that pleases Him and brings benefit to us and His targets.

Fixation.
