People got knocked down a great deal and tire quickly. They might look for a break in the waves, an opportunity to slip through, but wave upon wave presses in, relentlessly. There is also a terrible rip current that drags at legs wherever they are, making things more difficult and dangerous.

But this was just one day.

Yesterday the waves were calm, but still present. A person needed to be aware of themselves but the situation in the water was very manageable. A person could stand on his or her feet and last a long time in the water before tiring. The hot sun was more of what drove them away eventually, lest they become crisped beyond recognition.

But this was just one day.

The day before was stormy. Lightning flashed and thunder rolled. People peek out and think that things were letting up but by the time they were ready to go out, the deluge intenstified.

Not long before these days were hours in the car, cramped conditions, and this after having to plan, prepare and pack. Life was no beach at all then.

All this just makes me think of life’s seasons, the ups and downs that sometimes are long and arduous and sometimes change in an instant. Some days you feel that you are being slammed and battered and just can’t stand. Some days are just okay, not too intense.

Whatever your days are looking like, Paul had good advice for Timothy and I think it is good advice for each of us as well.

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.

2 Timothy 4:1-2

Whatever life is throwing at us, this says that we need to be active and aware and make the best of the time for Christ.
