God is not a cheeseburger. Sounds obvious enough I know but here is why I say this. In the USA, it is a difficult thing to go down a stretch of road and not be able to find a place that will sell you a cheeseburger. It is the ubiquitous food. It is not hard to find.
God tells us in the Old Testament and the New that if you seek Him you will find Him (Jeremiah 29:11-13 and Luke 11:9-13). He makes very clear in Proverbs 2 what this seeking looks like:
My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.
Do you want to know God? Do you want to understand? Are you tired of being defeated and confused and frustrated? Start by accepting God’s words. You don’t have to understanding them yet or even like them. Accept them as they are. Memorize His commands. Know what He expects of you. You don’t have to like the commands. You don’t even have to feel ready to do them all. Know them first. Don’t give all of this wisdom just a cursory reading. Go over and over it. Think about it. Roll it around in your mind. Be attentive for God’s Spirit to open up your mind to what is says. Still frustrated? Call out to God. Cry out to God. Listen again and if necessary again. See if God does not provide insight for you. Make this a search for precious treasure. How far would would you go for a cave full of gold and diamonds? Go for God in the same way. Better than earthly treasure would set you up for life, God will take you from now through eternity.
Seek Him, but not like fast food. God is not a cheeseburger.
