When we think to whom we are accountable–to whom do we need to answer for our actions, thoughts, political views, behaviors, and choices of every kind–what is our answer? The government, teachers, and other authorities? The answer here is: somewhat. Authorities are given the ability to punish for wrongdoing, so fear of punishment is a motivator here. What about friends, relatives and the like? The answer here is: somewhat. There is cultural and social pressure that causes us to be included or excluded based on our behavior. Ourself? We hear things like ‘to your own self be true’. Can self governance apart from outside influence work? Is it more than greed or envy or pride? These are difficult questions. Check yourself here. Do you get a visceral reaction at this point? Are you angry or disgusted at the idea of someone else having control over your choices–your life? That probably means that someone has hurt you in the past and you’ve told yourself never again and I am the captain of my soul. I am in charge of my life and no one else! I get the feeling this is where most of us are except where fear of some kind of repercussion keeps us following the rules and norms imposed by someone else. Does this in the end bring true and lasting fulfillment, happiness, and the like?
